New Zealand Airforce visit Tamaki College

It was a really exiting day here at Tamaki College. The New Zealand Air Force visited in their helicopter which landed on the school field. Our students were out to watch as they came into land. Bay from the Tamaki College Service Academy was on the helicopter as it came from over the shore, around the Sky Tower and then into Glen Innes. On the return trip, Tulsa and Sone from of TCTV were on board.

Friday was an exciting day for our two Year 10 classes who are participating in our netbook trial this year. They were given their netbooks and were helped in setting it up and getting on their Google Docs accounts.
We had loads of help on the day from Mrs Burt, Neven and Jan, so a huge thankyou to them.

Polyfest 2011 - The Kapa Haka Group...

The Kapa Haka group had a great time at Polyfest this year. They were a combined team with students from Glendowie College.

Introducing the Electives....

There is something new and exciting going on at Tamaki College this year. It is called the Electives!!
These happen on a Tuesday morning and a Thursday afternoon and give the students a chance to have a go at all sorts of different activities that they would not normally get a chance to try.
Examples include swimming, baking, anaimation, preparing for polyfest, to name just a few...
There is even a TCTV elective and that new team of Chantelle, Allen, Tulsa and Soni have put together this first video for you have have a little look at some of the electives.

It was a fabulous, hot afternoon on Tuesday this week and Tamaki College had their Athletics Day. Parents and staff were out on the school field waiting for the students to arrive in their house groups. It was a very colourful sight as they came out one by one, ready for an exciting afternoon of competition.
TCTV were there to catch all of the action as the students came out and as they competed in all the races.

Netbook Imaging Day....

It was a huge day here at Tamaki College today. Two of our Year 10 classes are taking part in the year long net book trial for Manaiakalani. Today was the day that all the net books were sorted out and made ready to go. The students will be using these to produce their work on Google Docs, using our cluster wide wireless network.
We had lots of help from our friends at Point England School who came to train our two Year 10 volunteers. Sela, Josh and Helen came and helped Boaza and Jessica learn how to set up the netbooks.

Big Talent in the park

ORGANISERS of Christmas in The Park weren't looking for groups to perform at tomorrow's event –
until they met The Talent.

Four young singing sensations formed the group after bonding over music while at Tamaki College.

They've performed to schools throughout the country, to 3000 people in Tonga and to former
Prime Minister Helen Clark.

Tomorrow they'll sing to their biggest audience of about 100,000 people at the Auckland Domain.

Tony O'Rourke says their pastor told them about the auditions earlier this year.

"They actually said no at first," the 21-year-old says. "I just emailed them back and said:
`I think you'll benefit from us singing'."

The organisers weren't looking for groups at that stage but invited The Talent to audition anyway.

"They didn't ask us for a callback or anything. They just said: `That's it, you're in'."

Tony met Sakalia Vaetolo, 21, Bruce Baiabe, 22, and Paula Fakalata, 19, when they were part of
the high school choir.

They all sang different parts so decided to see how they sounded as a quartet.

"We're good individually but we're much better when we're all together," Bruce says.

The group performs popular songs and old-school favourites like The Temptations' My Girl
and The Beach Boys' Barbara Ann.

When they first started they roped in a couple more mates and formed the band Island Emo,
which came second at the Smokefree Pacifica Beats competition. They then formed The Disciples
before the new name took over.

The group often visits schools around the country as part of The Revolution Tour, which is
organised by Equippers Church.

Members hope to fully dedicate themselves to touring next year and "taking a positive message
wherever we go".

Music was the first thing all four bonded over. Religion was the second.

They credit part of their success to Panmure couple Paula and Tania Finepolo.

The boys met them a few years ago and moved in with them shortly after.

The couple had been living in a flat in the CBD but moved to Panmure so the boys could be closer
to school.
All of them lived with the Finepolos at one stage, because of family circumstances and a desire to
live together.

"They took us in and kept us off the streets, away from parties and getting into all that stuff," Tony says.
"They helped build discipline in us."

The Talent members also say their families, friends and church played an integral role in shaping them.

"If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now," Bruce says.

Other east and bays residents performing at Christmas in the Park from 7.30pm tomorrow include
Remuera singer Edward Laurenson, 16-year-old Glendowie resident Stephanie Field and
Paddy Leishman, a 17-year-old Mission Bay singer/actor.

Young scientist's chance to realise a dream.

He hasn't yet finished high school but is already undertaking honours level research – and being recognised for it.

Leon Forbes is one of 20 students selected by the Royal Society of New Zealand to attend Realise the Dream.

The 18-year-old is excited to be part of the event that will see the young scientists and inventors travel from Auckland to Wellington next month stopping at top science and technology organisations along the way. It ends with a prizegiving in the capital on December 11.

Leon's selection was based on his work with the Liggins Institute over the past two years.

While he has as good a chance as any at being awarded one of the prizes he is modest about his work.

"It depends on the calibre of everyone else's work," he says.

The Tamaki College head boy has been part of the institute's Student Scientist Mentor programme for the past four years.

He's spent much of the past two years studying the effects of the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) on placental cytokine production.

In other words he is looking at how the chemical, which is found in many plastics, affects a group of molecules in the human placenta that regulate inflammation, infection and labour.

Present in most drink bottles, plastic baby bottles and the lining of tin cans, BPA is released when heated and becomes mixed in with the food.

Leon's mentor Dr Anna Ponnampalam is part of the institute's reproductive and developmental biology group and says BPA is a concern because its structure is very similar to estrogen.

"More of it could be bad. It's basically steroids. The body might not be able to differentiate."

Leon combined the chemical with samples from five placentas to see if there was any change in the gene expression.

The small scale of his experiment means there is not enough data to draw conclusive results but his research will become part of the preliminary study into the issue.

"There's enough there to say something could be happening. It warrants more investigation," Leon says.

The Panmure resident says the project has been a massive learning curve.

"Just learning all the techniques of pulling apart the placenta. It's heaps of fun. But it's crazy the amount of sterility you have to preserve."

Liggins Institute senior educator Helen Mora nominated Leon for Realise the Dream.

Prefects Assembly...

We had a great assembly this week at Tamaki College. The prefects for next year were announced and the auditorium was full of excitement as this year's prefects each read out one name. Family and friends were there to help celebrate with our new prefects and then they all went to the library for a lovely lunch.

A Fabulous Night at the Media Studies Film Presentations...

On Monday night this week, TCTV was honored to be invited to the Media Studies end of year screening night. The event has got so big this year that it was held in the Auditorium. Friends and family were there to support the Level 2 and Level 3 Media Studies classes as they showcased their end of course movies. We had popcorn, pizza, home made cakes and drinks to make the night complete.

Do you think you can make a music video ?
If yes ?...enter this competition...

You can do one song or do a combination of songs.
You can sing your own song or use tracks from other people.
You can act, sing, dance, use cartoons, puppets, anything you like.

The video can be made on cameras, mobile phones, webcams, any way you like as you are not being judged on the quality of the type of video.

You have the rest of this term and the holidays to make your videos.
Have them to Miss Ferguson by Monday 11th October.
This competition is open to all current students at Tamaki College.

The videos will be judged and the winners will be asked to make their video again on the TCTV cameras so that we have a really good quality music video for this year's Film Festival.

All entries that follow the rules will be shown on TCTV.

No gang, drugs or alcohol references.
Entries must be in the form of a digital file, either from a computer or phone.

It was a fabulous night last night for the Tamaki College senior students. It was the night of the Ball at the Hyatt Hotel and everyone turned up looking very glamorous. TCTV was outside the hotel waiting for everyone to arrive and check out all the beautiful outfits...

Rugby Girls Honoured in Assembly...

We had a great assembly at Tamaki College this week. The victorious girls Rugby team came into the auditorium to "We are the Champions". They were presented their winners certificates by Mrs Pamaka and the whole school was entertained by a highlights video put together by Miss Apelu, the girl's coach.

Last week Tamaki College took on Auckland Girls Grammar (AGGS) in the final at Cox’s Bay Reserve.
This was the first time Tamaki had been in the final. Last year Tamaki lost their semi-final to Onehunga High, who ended up winning the title in 2009. This year the same scenario occurred with Tamaki facing Onehunga in the semi- final, but this time finishing victorious.
AGGS had been undefeated all season, entering this game as overwhelming favourites to win. However their lead into the final had been disjointed as Manurewa High defaulted to AGGS in their semi-final. This meant AGGS had not played a game for three weeks due to the Manurewa default and the two weeks of the July holidays.
The first half saw Tamaki dominate, scoring three tries with the half time score 15 – 03. However AGGS did not give up showing plenty of determination to fight back. Both teams’ defensive lines were strong, holding each other out from crossing the try lines with no points scored in the second half.
Final score: Tamaki – 15 AGGS – 03
